Lab Technician for IDE TU Delft
Expertise: microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology
Job description
The Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is running a research and educational program that integrates biology into the biofabrication of materials and products using living organisms such as algae, fungi, and bacteria. We are seeking a lab technician (Onderwijs & Onderzoek medewerker) who is enthusiastic about biodesign and capable of sharing their knowledge and technical expertise to support researchers and students. Working closely with the biodesign research team, the technician will contribute to the ongoing biodesign educational track focused on cultivating, maintaining, and developing living materials. Key responsibilities include managing the physical biodesign lab space, ensuring safety for both researchers and the environment, and overseeing the maintenance of lab equipment and biological materials.
Responsibilities
In short, the technician will:
- Provide hands-on guidance to students in basic biolab techniques and proper use of biodesign lab equipment and facilities.
- Assist in the setup and execution of biodesign-related research projects.
- Ensure safe handling, preparation, and disposal of biological and chemical materials in compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, manage inventories, and support procurement of supplies and materials.
- Deliver safety instructions and training; monitor adherence to lab safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
- Oversee the scheduling and efficient use of the biolab, coordinating access and planning as needed.
Job requirements
- You have a degree in (micro)biology or similar field, minimal HBO level with at least 2 years’ work experience in a lab, or WO at a laboratory. Work experience in one or more of the following fields and corresponding techniques is an advantage: Biology and medical laboratory research or Biotechnology WO, Biomedical Sciences, Life Science and Technologies, Bio pharmaceutical sciences.
- You are familiar and trained in Safe Microbiology Techniques and like to train students to obtain these skills.
- You are familiar with basic chemicals and are willing to expand your knowledge in this area.
- You are curious, dedicated, open, proactive and ambitious.
- You like inter disciplinary work environment (including designers and engineers), and you are a good team player.
- You like to work in a team of international researchers and have affinity with guiding students during their (graduation) projects.
- The prospect of further developing yourself in laboratory work and doing practical research in the field of (biological) materials appeals to you very much.
- You are prepared to obtain both the required BHV and first aid (EHBO) certificate.
- Experience with handling and growing fungi, bacterial cellulose, and micro-algae is an advantage.

Conditions of employment
- Duration of contract is 1 year. Temporary with prospect of permanent
- A job of 15,2-24 hours per week.
- A salary based on Schaal 08 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a salary between €3218 - €4298 gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
