Join the team that aims to develop a new generation of Structural Batteries Composites as part of a EU-funded project on self-healing technologies for batteries.
Job description
The emerging field of Structural Batteries Composites (SBC) aims at developing multifunctional composites structures that can support mechanical forces during operation and simultaneously act as electrochemical energy storage. This new class of materials exploits the dual mechanical and electrochemical properties of carbon fibers (CF) used in aerospace composites, together with a solid-state electrolyte that acts as a binding matrix. The aim is to eventually extend the range of battery-powered airborne vehicles (e.g., drones) and provide alternative means to store electrical energy in an airplane. The scope of the work involves experimental and modelling aspects of a new class of SBC that utilizes self-healing electrolytes, which can autonomously repair after possible matrix cracking during operation. The position involves working on various aspects of the structural battery development, including self-healing solid state electrolyte and separator, CF-based cathode/anode, SBC fabrication with integrated sensors provided by partners, and mechanical and electrochemical testing to quantify the effect of the self-healing technology on the lifetime extension of the system. The postdoctoral position is part of a EU-funded project of self-healing batteries (HEALING BAT) which involves various university and industrial partners across Europe. At TU Delft, the HEALING BAT project team involves other postdoctoral researcher, MSc students and a supervisory team from the Department of Aerospace Structures and Materials.
Job Requirements
We are seeking for an excellent candidate who has knowledge on batteries and the desire to learn about aerospace composite materials. Emphasis is on experimental activities while modelling and simulation are desired but not a pre-requisite. In particular, we look for a candidate with
- A PhD in an appropriate discipline, including Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or Applied Physics
- Experience with the fabrication of batteries
- Experience with electrochemical testing and a desire to learn about mechanical testing
- A curiosity-driven mindset and a strong motivation of conducting independent research
- Inclination for team-work and effective communication in an international environment
- Desire to publish scientific articles and participate in project meetings and international conferences
