About Thales

With 80.000 talents working in 68 countries, we are one of the biggest high-tech employers in the field of safety and security. In the Netherlands, where 2500 employees are based, we are located in seven cities: Huizen, Amersfoort, Rotterdam, Delft, Breda, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ). Together with an extensive ecosystem of knowledge partners, customers and suppliers, we work on radars for naval vessels, cyber security solutions, transportation systems, communication equipment for land forces, cryogenic cooling solutions, research & development for radar tech (in collaboration with TU Delft).

The Delft department Advanced Development & Studies (ADS) Sensors specializes, among other things, in new radar concepts and algorithms. Approximately 50 people work in Delft, about a quarter of whom are part of ADS Sensors.

About the assignment

In this assignment, methods will be conceived, developed, and tested on quantum computers to help solve radar-related problems that would require significant computing power using classical methods. The goal of this project is to demonstrate the added value of a quantum solution in the context of complex military radar systems. In consultation with the internship supervisors, a suitable problem will be formulated and developed using a quantum algorithm, after which its functionality and performance can be assessed through simulations.

Affinity

A solid background in physics/mathematics is required, as well as an affinity for algorithms and (ideally) electromagnetism. Knowledge of and some experience with quantum computing and quantum simulation packages such as Qiskit is a plus, as is programming in Python.

What’s in it for you

  • An interesting internship or graduation assignment within our high-tech, innovative work environment;
  • A comfortable, flexible work space in a modern environment;
  • An excellent internship allowance;
  • Its own student association where you can participate in educational and fun activities.
