We are looking for a Laboratory Technician – Bacteriology and Mycology for our client Monsanto. In this role, you will support Bayer’s Quality Testing team, focusing on the preparation and initiation of samples. These samples are used to detect the presence of certain bacterial and/or fungal pathogens on vegetable seeds and/or tissues.

Please note: this is not a research position, but a role within a high-throughput work environment where routine and repetitive tasks are essential to delivering high-quality test results for our stakeholders.

Where will you be working?

You will be joining an innovative site in Bergschenhoek, where the focus is on the development and production of vegetable seeds. Research is conducted into stronger and more sustainable crops, such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. In addition to plant breeding, the site also works on testing and improving cultivation methods.

Main Purpose:

Under the general supervision of a Senior Technician, the Laboratory Technician prepares and initiates quality testing samples in a laboratory setting.

What will you be doing?

• Perform laboratory activities, service assignments, and related administrative work based on short- to medium-term planning
• Retrieve, prepare, and process seed samples for testing
• Perform serial dilutions and plate samples
• Assist in setting up bioassays when required
• Prepare controls and maintain stock inventory using the appropriate tools
• Extract data from LabVantage for correct labeling and documentation
• Ensure compliance with quality and phytosanitary regulations

Requirements

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Able to work independently as well as in a team
• Experience with general laboratory practices and sterile techniques
• Accurate, detail-oriented, and strong problem-solving skills
• Experience following SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and proper labeling
• Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal
• Able to lift up to 25 kg (e.g., autoclaving bins and seed crates) when needed

Desired qualifications and competencies:

• Minimum MBO Level 4 or HBO knowledge and intellectual capacity
• At least 2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a laboratory or production environment

We are looking for an organized and reliable person with a proactive attitude, someone who is not afraid to share ideas, is a team player but also comfortable working independently, and understands that we are a service-oriented laboratory working with strict deadlines. There is a probationary period of 1 month with 2 check-ins, and during onboarding, all expectations will be clearly outlined.
