The Seed Health Laboratory is looking to fill the full-time position of Lab Technician within the Bacteriology and Mycology Division. You will support the Quality Testing department and will focus on the preparation and initiation of samples. These samples are used to detect the presence of certain bacterial and/or fungal pathogens on vegetable seeds and/or tissue. This is a position set in a high-volume work environment where the performance of routine, repetitive tasks are required to generate high-quality test results for our stakeholders.

Main Purpose:
Under the general supervision of a Senior Technician, the Laboratory Technician prepares and initiates Quality Testing samples in a laboratory setting.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

• Carry out laboratory activities, service assignments, and corresponding administrative work based on short to medium term planning.
• Retrieve, prepare, and process seed samples for testing.
• Perform serial dilutions, and plate samples.
• Assist in the setting up of bioassays when needed.
• Prepare controls as needed and maintain stock inventory using the appropriate tools.
• Participate in proficiency tests.
• Be able to pull information from LabVantage.
• Ensure documentation for each test meets quality assurance requirements.
• Proactive approach towards process improvement.
• Support peers during execution of activities.
• Ensure regulatory compliance regarding quality- and phytosanitary policies.
• Embrace a safe, clean, organized, compliant, and positive work environment.

Requirements:

• Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Able to work in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment.
• Capable of working independently and within a team.
• Expertise with general laboratory practices and sterile technique.
• Good attention to detail and capable of troubleshooting.
• Familiar with following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and proper labeling.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Able to lift 25 kg (e.g. autoclaving bins and seed crates) when needed.
• Willing to assist in different laboratories and conditions.

Desired Qualifications and Competencies:

• At least MBO Level 4 (Senior Secondary Vocational Education) or HBO knowledge and intellectual capacity.
• 2 years of relevant work experience preferably in a lab- and/or product supply environment.
