Your job

As PhD candidate, you will be part of the project SHIELT – Shelf-life for plant-based meat alternatives. This project aims to develop predictive microbiology and risk assessment tools to support safe-by-design development of plant-based meat alternatives improving supply chain sustainability and limiting food waste. The novelty of the project relies on the development of multi-species prediction models and risk assessment frameworks describing the dynamics and interactions of spoilage microorganisms and pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus in plant-based products. The SHIELT project is in collaboration with Wageningen Food Biobased Research (WFBR) and various industrial partners.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • use experimental and literature data to develop mathematical microbial kinetics models and quantitative risk assessments;
  • develop user-friendly tools for quality and safety assessment of plant-based meat analogues;
  • supervise BSc and MSc thesis research projects;
  • participate in education as supervisor;
  • publish results and findings in peer reviewed journals.
You will work here
The research is embedded within the laboratory of Food Microbiology, and member of the FHM team, which is led by Prof. Marcel Zwietering. You will be co-supervised by Dr Cristina Serra-Castelló and Prof. Heidy den Besten.
Your qualities
  • a successfully completed MSc degree in a relevant field, such as Food Safety, Data Science, Food Science, Biotechnology;
  • experience in predictive modelling and quantitative microbial risk assessment approaches;
  • experience with relevant software tools and programming languages such as R or Python;
  • an interest in working together with people from the food industry;
  • you are an ambitious and highly motivated scientist;
  • you are a creative researcher, being independent yet at the same time being a team player;
  • you have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level. Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. More information can be found here.

The gross salary for the first year is € 3059,-. per month rising to € 3881,-  in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well.
