At this innovative life-science start-up, you will turn formulation science into robust, reproducible processes. You will have the unique opportunity to help build the in-house R&D laboratory from scratch while advancing a proprietary lipid carrier platform towards scale-up. In this hands-on role, you combine smart experimental design with laboratory work in a dynamic, high-impact environment. Ready to bridge the gap between science and manufacturing? Discover how you can shape the future of this R&D facility.
Do you enjoy turning promising formulation science into robust, reproducible processes in a dynamic start-up environment? At our client, you will combine hands-on laboratory work with smart experimental design and help build the R&D capabilities needed to advance a proprietary nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) platform towards scale-up and manufacturing.

Functie omschrijving
As Formulation & Process Development Scientist, you will develop NLC formulations and prototypes, design structured experiments and translate formulation know-how into measurable process parameters. You will also help establish our client's in-house R&D formulation laboratory in Leiden, creating the equipment set-up, workflows and documentation needed for reliable development work.
This is a genuinely hands-on position. During the first 6-12 months, you will spend a significant part of your time at the bench preparing prototypes, running experiments and troubleshooting processes. You will report to the Technology Transfer Manager and work closely with external laboratories, CROs, CMOs and manufacturing partners.
Your responsibilities:
- Help set up and organize the in-house R&D formulation laboratory, including equipment selection and practical workflows
- Develop and prepare NLC formulations and prototypes for selected active ingredients
- Design and execute Design of Experiments (DoE) studies to identify critical formulation and process variables
- Investigate parameters such as temperature, mixing, shear, addition rate, cooling, hold time and formulation composition
- Improve process reproducibility and simplify experience-based manufacturing steps by converting them into measurable parameters
- Generate samples for characterization, stability, release and bioaccessibility studies, and interpret the resulting data
- Maintain clear formulation histories, batch records, experimental documentation and process observations
- Support laboratory scale-up, external pilot manufacturing and technology-transfer activities with CROs and CMOs
As a Formulation & Process Development Scientist, you thrive in a dynamic start-up environment where not everything has been fully defined yet. You are flexible and comfortable adapting as priorities and processes evolve. With your proactive and hands-on mindset, you readily take ownership of tasks, even when they fall outside your original scope. You enjoy collaborating with colleagues, building things together and contributing to the development of a high-quality R&D facility.
- MSc or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Technology, Formulation Science, Chemical Engineering, Colloid Science, Chemistry or a related field
- Relevant, hands-on experience in formulation or process development
- Experience with DoE, process development, high-shear homogenization or mixing, formulation stability and/or particle-size characterization
- Experience with lipid nanoparticles, NLCs, nanoemulsions, emulsions, colloidal systems, poorly soluble compounds or related technologies is strongly preferred
- Experience in helping to set up or organize an R&D laboratory is an advantage
- Excellent English communication skills and willingness to travel occasionally to external laboratories or manufacturing partners
Our client is an early-stage life-science company developing a proprietary nanostructured lipid carrier platform for poorly soluble and lipophilic active ingredients. Its ambition is to transform promising formulation know-how into a scientifically understood, reproducible and scalable technology that can be transferred successfully to manufacturing partners.
