You will be directly shaping the future of KPN’s network footprint. Through your designs and leadership, you will ensure the integration of modern IP/MPLS and Optical transport capabilities, contribute to strategic planning and support execution through detailed design and collaboration. You’ll be a key enabler of transformation and innovation, bringing clarity and direction across organisational and technological boundaries.

Your key responsibilities:

• Define and evolve the target architecture for KPN’s Metro, Core, and Peering networks, covering  areas such as WDM, OTN, Photonics,  and multi-layer convergence.
• Translate KPN’s Metro, Core, and Peering network strategy into detailed architectural designs, network principles, and design patterns.
• Collaborate with strategy leads to ensure architectural alignment with business goals and customer value.
• Support the design and execution of transformation programmes, ensuring architectural integrity throughout.
• Act as the architectural lead during technology evaluations, proof-of-concepts, and design validations.
• Guide vendor selection and engagement to ensure technical and strategic fit with KPN’s architectural goals.
• Provide thought leadership and technical coaching to engineering, operations, and project teams across KPN.
• Contribute to business case development by articulating the architectural impact and value.

As Architect IP/Optical, you will play a critical role in defining and evolving the architecture of KPN’s Metro, Core, and Peering networks. You will help transform cutting-edge technological trends into robust architectural designs and technical direction, ensuring our IP and Optical network layers' scalability, resilience, and efficiency.

With a deep understanding of transport technologies and architectural principles, you will guide both the strategic direction and the concrete implementation of our network evolution. Working in close collaboration with strategy leads, engineering teams, and transformation leads, your contribution will be essential to the successful realisation of KPN’s. 

You’ll be part of the Network & Cloud team: a dedicated group of strategists, architects, and transformation experts passionate about technology and innovation. Together, you work within the Technology Office—KPN’s innovation engine—where strategy is translated into action and real results.

You are a visionary architect with a hands-on approach. You simplify complexity, build scalable and resilient designs, and communicate technical decisions clearly at all levels. You combine strategic awareness with technical depth and enjoy guiding transformation across organizational boundaries.

 

To succeed in this role, you bring:

• Proven experience in telecom network architecture, with strong expertise in Optical Transport (WDM, OTN, coherent optics) as well as good understanding of  IP/MPLS (BGP, IS-IS, Segment Routing and EVPN).
• A systems-thinking mindset with the ability to design for scalability, operational efficiency, and future growth.
• Understanding of photonics, fibre infrastructure planning, optical switching, and converged IP-optical design.
• Experience working within complex transformation programmes and cross-functional environments.
• The ability to simplify complexity and clearly communicate architectural decisions and rationale.
• A collaborative mindset and a willingness to mentor and engage with stakeholders across business and technology.
• A strategic awareness of technology trends, market movements, and vendor roadmaps relevant to IP and Optical networking.

As an employer, we offer you an attractive package, including:

• Gross monthly salary between €6,576 and €10,389, depending on your experience (based on 40 hours)
• A fixed 13th-month salary, partially paid monthly and partially in January
• Annual individual and collective salary increases according to our collective labor agreement (CAO)
