As a European Natural Gas Portfolio Trader, you will be responsible for managing the company’s gas positions across various European hubs, optimizing the commercial value of the portfolio through active trading and risk management. You will operate in short- and mid-term markets, including spot, prompt, and forward timeframes, ensuring that supply, demand, and storage assets are optimally balanced and monetized. Your decisions will directly impact the PnL of the portfolio trading book, and you will work in close coordination with portfolio managers, originators, and risk teams to manage exposures in a volatile and dynamic market environment.
Market Trading & Optimization
Trade across European natural gas hubs (e.g., TTF, NBP, PEG, THE, ZTP) in spot, prompt, and forward markets to optimize the portfolio's value
Manage open positions actively within delegated risk limits, balancing hedging needs with market opportunities
Execute physical and financial trades (e.g., OTC, exchange-based) in line with commercial strategy and asset constraints
Execute hedging strategies to mitigate market and volumetric risk of generation and consumption positions
Manage open positions in alignment with internal risk limits, market outlook, and asset flexibility
Take opportunistic asset backed positions where appropriate, within defined mandate
Market Monitoring & Analysis
Monitor real-time market fundamentals including weather, LNG flows, pipeline outages, storage levels, and geopolitical risks
Use quantitative tools and market intelligence to identify arbitrage opportunities (e.g., time spreads, hub spreads, cross-commodity)
Contribute to market views and trade ideas for internal discussions and strategy alignment
Feed trading insights back into portfolio management team
Asset Baked Trading
Translate the embedded optionality of assets into commercial trading decisions
Collaborate with the Portfolio Manager to optimize gas storages against market signals
Manage and trade gas flexibility contracts as part of the portfolio
Collaboration & Systems
Work closely with analysts, meteorologists, portfolio managers, and quants to enhance trading strategies
Support improvements to tools, models, and trading infrastructure (e.g., algorithms, ETRM systems)
Contribute to shaping a data-driven, fast-paced trading culture
You will work together as one team in Portfolio Trading but also have individual responsibilities to contribute to our goals. You will be creating an environment in where you exchange insights and opinions with colleagues.
In addition, you bring the following with you:
- University degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or a quantitative discipline.
- 2–5 years of trading experience in European gas.
- Knowledge of European gas hubs (TTF, NBP, etc.), trading instruments, and market structures.
- Experience with gas logistics, storage, transportation, and balancing regimes.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills; ability to interpret large data sets in a trading context.
- High stress tolerance, decisive, and comfortable taking responsibility in time-critical situations.
- Experience with Python, SQL, or trading support tools is a strong advantage.
- A proactive, results-oriented and entrepreneurial personality;
- A winner's mentality where you show resilience and perseverance to achieve successes.
- Good communication skills.
- Team player with eye for cooperation with the Portfolio Management team.
- You are already resident in the Netherlands
As a Gas Power Trader, you will work within the Portfolio Trading Team for Eneco right next to Rotterdam-Alexander station. A complex, dynamic environment where ever-moving markets, ever-changing positions, new technologies, and the law of inhibiting head start create a challenging field of tension.
The Trading Team is part of horizontal chain Trading and Origination (T&O). Valie Chain (VC) T&O is the international trading division of Eneco. With a diverse team of colleagues who are motivated and highly educated employees, we work on an optimal market vision that supports Eneco's sustainability goals. VC T&O forms a dynamic and complex working environment that requires a lot of initiative and insight. We interact quickly with each other in an informal, transparent and collegial atmosphere.
In a rapidly changing energy landscape, you and your team will shape the energy transition. A tough job, with challenging but achievable targets. We reward you for this with our good and modern terms of employment.
