Senior Cost Engineer Piping and Mechanical Zaandam • FairPlay Engineering

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Cost Engineer with a strong background in piping and mechanical engineering. In this role, you will become an integral member of the cost engineering team, working on both new-build and renovation industrial and utility projects. You will translate client requirements and conceptual designs into robust cost models, while identifying and managing risks and opportunities—ensuring projects succeed both technically and financially.

Whether it involves integrating sustainably generated energy, implementing an Energy Management System for Smart Grids, or electrifying transport and logistics, our team of independent experts works daily to bring projects to life. Operating nationwide from our offices in Dordrecht and Zaandam, we undertake various medium- and high-voltage projects. We help clients connect battery storage systems and solar parks, transition to electric mobility, and more. Our services include consulting, design, implementation, and maintenance.

Develop cost estimates and budgets from the early concept phase through detailed design and tender phases, balancing depth and accuracy based on the project stage and available information. Perform cost calculations for piping and mechanical systems on various projects, such as new construction or modifications in industrial contexts. Advise on cost-engineering strategy for projects, providing proactive input and guidance to internal teams. Establish risk analyses: identify, qualify, and quantify cost risks and opportunities and integrate them into the cost model. Maintain and develop cost-engineering practices: create benchmarks, cost-norms, and best-practice standards for future use. Conduct site visits to capture scope, verify assumptions, and support accurate cost estimation and risk assessment. Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors: request quotes, assess their impact on cost models, and integrate their input. Collaborate with project execution, sourcing, and tender teams to optimize budgets, maintain cost control, and contribute to winning bids. Support continuous improvement of the cost-engineering function by sharing expertise and evolving internal tools and methods.

• A completed technical education (MBO or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, piping engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years’ experience in cost engineering or cost calculation—with minimum 3 years focused specifically on piping & mechanical systems. 
• Strong knowledge of mechanical and piping systems used in industrial or utility environments; experience with both new builds and renovation projects.
• Demonstrated capability in developing cost models, budgets and risk analyses for large-scale industrial projects.
• Commercial awareness, decisive nature and initiative-taking mindset; you feel comfortable advising stakeholders and influencing decisions. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong client orientation.
